Data corruption is the unintended modification of a file or the losing of information that often occurs during reading or writing. The reason can be hardware or software failure, and as a consequence, a file can become partially or entirely corrupted, so it will no longer function correctly since its bits shall be scrambled or lost. An image file, for instance, will no longer present an accurate image, but a random combination of colors, an archive will be impossible to unpack as its content will be unreadable, and so on. In the event that such a problem occurs and it is not identified by the system or by an administrator, the data will become corrupted silently and when this happens on a disk drive which is a part of a RAID array where the information is synchronized between various different drives, the corrupted file will be duplicated on all other drives and the harm will be long term. A large number of commonly used file systems either do not offer real-time checks or don't have high quality ones that will detect an issue before the damage is done, so silent data corruption is a very common issue on internet hosting servers where huge amounts of data are stored.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Web Hosting
We have tackled the issue of silent data corruption on all of our web hosting servers by using the hi-tech Z file system, or ZFS. The latter is better than other file systems as it is the only one on the market which checks all of the files instantly by employing a checksum - a digital identifier that's unique for each and every file. When you upload content to your account, it'll be stored on several SSD drives and constantly synchronized between them for redundancy. ZFS constantly analyzes the checksum of all files and if any file is detected as damaged, it is replaced promptly with a good copy from some other disk. As this happens in real time, there's no risk that a corrupted file may remain or may be duplicated on the remaining SSDs. ZFS requires plenty of physical memory to perform the real-time checks and the advantage of our cloud web hosting platform is that we use multiple powerful servers working together. In case you host your sites with us, your info will be undamaged no matter what.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Servers
Your semi-dedicated server account will be resistant to silent data corruption because all of our storage servers use the advanced ZFS file system. What makes the aforementioned unique is that it uses checksums, or digital identifiers, in order to guarantee the integrity of each file. When you upload content to your account, it'll be kept on a couple of redundant drives operating in a RAID i.e. the files shall be the same on all drives. All of the copies of a given file will feature the same checksum on all hard drives and ZFS will compare the checksums of the copies right away, and if it finds a mismatch, that would indicate that one of the copies is corrupted, it will swap that file with a good copy from one of the other disks. Even if there's an unforeseen power failure, the data on the servers will not be corrupted and there won't be any need for a time-consuming system check that other file systems perform after some malfunction, extending the time needed for the server to return online. ZFS is the only file system which can really protect your content from silent data corruption.
